Chef's Assistant (Part-Time)

Position Summary: 

The chef’s assistant is a primary food preparation and service role. The position holds a diverse set of responsibilities ranging from food and meal production to directing support staff, including students.  This position is part-time up to 25 hours per week, primarily weekends.

Essential Functions: 

Oversees all kitchen and front of the house functions in the absence of the House Chef

Completes advance food preparation for meals

Supports the completion and execution of meals

Directs and assists student employees

Is responsible for maintaining the organization and cleanliness of the front of the house

Responsible for the restocking and maintenance of beverage areas, dry goods/cereal area and table condiments

Responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen at-large and kitchen equipment including storage units, floors and food preparation stations

 Is responsible for stocking and maintaining the selections on the salad bar as well as the setup and maintenance of the food service line during meal periods

Attendance and participation in staff meetings

Non-Essential Functions: 

Contributes to the weekly menu

Assists in taking inventory, restocking, ordering

Meat butchery

Baking of breads/ baked goods and fabrication of dough

Checking in deliveries


High school diploma or equivalent

24 months food service experience or relatable schooling

Servsafe level 1 certification at or within 90 days of hire

Front and back of the house experience preferred

Distinct passion for food and utilizing local, in season ingredients/products preferred

Required Skills/Physical Abilities: 

Must be able to stand on your feet for long periods of time

Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally

Must be able to give verbal direction in English as well as read and write English

Must be able to safely use knives and other equipment for extended periods of time

Must have a good attitude towards work and working with others as well as taking direction from managers.

Must be able to initiate and manage a wide variety of tasks and projects simultaneously

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: 

Serve safe level 1 or equivalent

Environmental Considerations: 

Occasional exposure to low level cleaning chemicals

Exposure to very hot and very cold liquids and gas

Exposure to potential food allergens including but not limited to tree nuts, nuts, wheat, seafood, soy, eggs and dairy
