Thursday, January 20, 2011 - 10:49am
Prexy Nesbitt screens the documentary Skin Deep (1999). Activist and educator Prexy Nesbitt (and Antioch alumnus 1967) introduces and discusses Skin Deep, the episode he co-wrote as part of the award-winning BBC/WGBH history series The People's Century 1900-1999. Skin Deep examines the fight against legal and institutionalized racism in the United States and South Africa from the 1950s through the 1990s, drawing upon interviews with the courageous people who took their protests against segregation and inequality into the streets and beyond. Long active in the labor movement, the U.S. civil rights movement, and African freedom struggles, Nesbitt serves as a consultant on African affairs and on African-American history. He currently teaches African History at Columbia College in Chicago and leads educational political tours to Africa.
