Yellow Springs’ Black Civil War Veterans Genealogy Workshop

Workshop Lead: Dan Gediman ‘82 and Denyce Peyton

Hosted by the Coretta Scott King Center

Antioch College welcomes Reckoning, Inc. to lead the Yellow Springs’ Black Civil War Veterans Genealogy Workshop. In this workshop, each participant will research a 19th century Yellow Springs resident who was a Civil War veteran. Prior to the workshop each participant will be sent via email some recommended readings about the history of Black soldiers’ role in the Civil War, as well as copies of the combined military service records (CMSR) and a pension file for their assigned veteran. It will be assumed that participants will read through these materials prior to the first workshop session.

There are no prerequisites and no background in history or genealogy necessary. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in African American history, Yellow Springs history, or genealogical research, especially members of the local Black community.

Two Saturdays: December 2nd and 9th 9am-12:00pm and 1-4:00pm lunch is included.

Fee: General $150, Senior Citizens $95, Students $75
