Graydon E. McCormick '62

Graydon E. McCormick, 79, longtime resident of North Andover, died on Monday, November 4, 2013, at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Graydon was born and brought up in Waynesfield, Ohio. He was predeceased by his parents, Graydon H. and Mildred McCormick. He was a man of many talents, a woodworker who made furniture, an outdoorsman, and gardening, sailing, canoeing, and fishing were among his hobbies. He served in the U.S. Army with the Occupation forces in Heidelberg, Germany, from 1955 to 1957. In 1962, he graduated from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, meeting and marrying his wife, Mary, there. He earned an Master of Science degree in science education at the University of Utah in 1963. Moving to Boston, he taught biology at Newman Preparatory School for some years. After earning a second master's degree in counseling at Suffolk University, he ran sheltered work programs, first in Lynn, and later, for many years at Tri-City Mental Health Center in Malden, until his retirement. There, he developed a successful landscaping program, taught clients woodworking and other skills. A proud member of SEIU, he helped to unionize Tri-City Mental Health Center. He ran for the Massachusetts State Legislature in the early 2000s as a labor candidate, supported by his union and the AFL-CIO. In retirement, he delivered flowers for Kokee Flowers in Andover, and volunteered for the Merrimack Valley Project in Lawrence. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. (Aronson) McCormick '62; daughter, Kate E. McCormick of Quincy; son, Seth J. McCormick and his wife, Cheryl E. (Hauser) of Cullowhee, N.C.; granddaughters, Freya and Aubrey McCormick; his brother, Cliff McCormick and wife, June, of Millbridge, Maine. ARRANGEMENTS: His cremated remains will be taken to a family plot in Ables' Hill Cemetery in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, in the spring. Assisting the family is The Cremation Service of Massachusetts,
