Joan Winkler '48

Joan Winkler, 90, died on July 2, 2017, at her home at Sunrise on Connecticut Avenue, Washington, DC. Born in the Bronx in New York, NY, she is the daughter of Samuel C. Cooper and Ruth Friedman Cooper.

Joan and her sister, Nancy, grew up in Belle Harbor, NY. Joan graduated from Far Rockaway High School and Antioch College, and earned a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Maryland.

She lived her adult life in the Washington, DC area, primarily in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, MD. Joan was a skilled cook and homemaker, a competitive golfer, an avid reader, a loyal friend and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and mother-in-law.

Her beloved husband of 58 years, Ralph Winkler, died in 2006. She is the mother of Ellen Winkler (Albert Slawsky), Peter Winkler (Barbara Kraft) and Laurie Winkler (Jeff Rothman); grandmother of Sara, Jeffrey, Paul and Hannah; and great-grandmother of Reed, Dylan and Phoebe.

The family observed Shiva at the home of Peter and Barbara on July 6. Contributions in Joan's memory may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union or the League of Women Voters, two organizations Joan actively supported.
