John A. Uhrich '70

John A. “Jack” Uhrich, MSW, M.Ed, MAT, a psychotherapist, teacher, and activist, died on Friday, July 18, 2014, in Aiken, SC. He was 70 years old. Dedicated to a life of service and social justice, Jack worked tirelessly with individuals, families, and organizations to improve their lives and make positive, impactful contributions to their communities. He was the Green Party candidate for US Congress for New Mexico in 1996. He also ran for Sandoval, New Mexico County Commissioner in 1998. Born in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, he resided and worked in Philadelphia, PA; Brooklyn, New York; Placitas, New Mexico; and Aiken, South Carolina. A graduate of Lebanon Valley College, Antioch College, and Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work, he was a teacher in New York and New Mexico and an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina School of Social Work. He was also a psychotherapist in private practice in New York, New Mexico, and South Carolina. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Arlean Tessler; stepson Jonathan Tessler and his wife, Michele; stepdaughter Vicki Bernard and her former husband Billy Bernard, and her current partner Kimmy Baker; stepson Matthew Tessler and his wife, Lauren; grandchildren Jordan Bernard and his wife, Shelby, Sarah Bernard, Isabella Bernard, Leah Tessler and James Tessler; Greg Santos and Tim Santos; and godchild Alexes Hargrove. Jack is also survived by brothers Tom Uhrich and his wife, Evonne; Jim Uhrich and his wife, Sue; Kevin Uhrich and his life partner, Marina Tse; and sisters Catherine Anderson and her husband, Terry; Cecilia Schmidt and her husband, Paul; Martha Uhrich Shaak  Mary Uhrich Kern. Jack also leaves behind numerous loving nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins and countless friends. He is predeceased by his mother Faye Shields Uhrich and father John Allen “Brud” Uhrich, Jr. A memorial service will be held at the Aiken Unitarian Universalist Church, at a date to be announced.
