Obituary: Joseph R. Kelly Jr. ’52

JOSEPH RAY KELLY, 81, of Hudson, OH died Oct. 29, 2010 surrounded by his loving family.

Beloved husband and family man, he is survived by his wife Ruth (neé Barrack) of 59 years; sons Douglas (Nancy) of Moreland Hills, OH, Kenneth (Pamela) of Monroe, CT, David (Sheryl) of Hudson, OH; grandchildren Daniel and Matthew; Ryan (Kristina), Sarah, and Thomas; William, Joseph, and Michael; one great-granddaughter, Annabelle; and sisters Anne Hoffman and Jean Bair.

A graduate of Langley High School in Pittsburgh, PA and Antioch College in Yellow Springs, OH, he began his career in the Rubber Industry working for Vernay Laboratories for four years before joining Goodyear Tire and Rubber where he retired in 1991 as the General Sales Manager of the Chemical Division. A resident of Hudson since 1964, Mr. Kelly was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Hudson, where he served as a deacon for many years.

An Eagle Scout himself, Mr. Kelly was Scoutmaster of the church-sponsored Boy Scout Troop 320 from 1966 to 1972. During his tenure the troop produced 31 Eagle Scouts, including his three sons.

Athletic throughout his life, in 1984, Joe ran the Columbus Marathon and was honored that year to carry the Olympic Torch through Akron on its journey to the Los Angeles Olympics. A man of many accomplishments, he considered his family to be his finest. He will be sadly missed by all of them.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on November 13, 2010 at the First Congregational Church of Hudson, OH.
