Obituary: Mildred Geist '45

It is with much sadness that the family of Mildred Geist announces her death on May 28, 2011. Mildred was born July 6, 1922, in Brookville, Ohio. She grew up in nearby Dayton, OH, and graduated from Antioch College in 1945 where she met her husband, Frederick S. Geist. After moving to Cleveland, she worked for six years as secretary to one of the vice presidents of Case Western Reserve University while Frederick attended medical school and served his internship and residencies. They then moved to Dallas where they remained, except for Frederick's service in the Navy in WWII and the Air Force during the Korean conflict. In addition to working in her church, Mildred was active as a volunteer in the American Cancer Society's Reach for Recovery program. Her interests always included music, and she played second flute in the ColumbuDallass Symphony Orchestra while in college; ballroom dancing became a new interest after the children had left for college. She and her husband also enjoyed playing bridge throughout their 66 years of marriage. In later years, as macular degeneration became more severe, many of her activities had to be curtailed. With the help of her always-caring husband and some thoughtful and understanding friends, she was able to continue playing bridge regularly. A memorial service will be held at Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 8787 Greenville Avenue, on June 16th at 11 a.m. Interment will be held at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery at 3 p.m. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Frederick S. Geist '45, daughter Kathryn Geist, and son Edward Geist and wife Kaye. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Retina Foundation of the Southwest, 9900 N. Central Expressway, Suite 400, Dallas, Texas 75231
