Obituary: Nancy D. Sabbagh '51

Nancy Day Smith Sabbagh died peacefully on Friday, Sept. 21, 2012 at her home in New Providence, NJ. She was 84. Memorial visitation will be held at Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial, 646 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Heights on Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. and again on Thursday, Sept. 27, 10-11 a.m. followed by a memorial service in the funeral home beginning at 11. Nancy was born in Jersey City to S. Willard and Hazel Smith, and was raised in Bernardsville. Her father was treasurer, and briefly president of Childs Restaurant Company. She graduated from Antioch College in 1951, where she studied biochemistry and became employed by Ciba Pharmaceutical Products as a pharmacologist. There she met her husband, George Sabbagh, a World War II veteran, of Summit. Together they raised five happy, loving children in New Providence. After the sudden loss of her daughter, Sandra in 1975, and subsequent loss of her husband in 1976, she devoted herself to the care of her family. Nancy worked many years as a physical therapist's aide at PRO in Morganville and later as a bookkeeper for Vincent J. Rizzo Opticians in Bernardsville before retiring at age 83. Her interests included gardening, knitting, genealogy, crossword puzzles and the New York Yankees. Mrs. Sabbagh, also known as "Eema", is survived by her children, Douglas (Patricia) of Middlesex, Michael (Kathleen), of Flemington, Laura (Paul) Kropfl of New Providence, and Tracey (Robert) Hodge of Hackettstown. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, George, and her daughter, Sandra, Nancy was also pre-deceased by her brothers, Everett and Willard Smith.
