Obituary: Sulema Garza Reyna '77

Corpus Christi, TX -- Sulema Garza Reyna, 84, passed away on May 28, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Sulema was preceded in death by her parents, Luis and Alejandra Prezas Garza, and her husband, Oscar H. Reyna. She is survived by her daughters, Gaila Reyna-Arguell (John), and Cynthia V. Reyna, her brother, Juan Jose Garza, niece, Judy Flores Cruz, all of Corpus Christi, grandchildren, James B. Little (Tara) of Branson, Missouri, Alicia Kolen (Jarvis), and great-grandchildren Brent, Serenity, and Sofia Alejandra Kolen of Little Rock, Arkansas, special friend, Irma Olivares, 'adopted' daughters, Mary Helen Rios, Rosemary Bernal, Ann Paredes, Marisela Saldana, Peggie Lewis, Anna Mendez, and Stephanie Witkowski, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Sulema was born on September 30, 1926, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Luis and Alejandra Prezas Garza. She was raised in Falfurrias, Texas, and graduated Valedictorian from Falfurrias High School in 1944. After moving to Corpus Christi, Sulema met Oscar H. Reyna while she was working at the Nueces County Court House, and married in 1948. They were longtime members of Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, The Lucky Strikers and Scepter Clubs, and very active in the Democratic Party. Sulema and Oscar traveled to many places including Europe, South America, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and throughout the United States. She received her Bachelor's degree from Texas A & I University in Kingsville and her Master's Degree from Antioch College in 1977. She was a devoted teacher at George Evans Elementary for 25 years, and also worked at The Adult Learning Center and tutored at The Boys & Girls Club, believing that all her students were special. She was a very generous and caring person, donating to many charities and organizations. Special thanks to the staff at Cimarron Nursing Home and Rehab Center including Eloisa, Kim, Catherine, Bea and Jennifer, Dr. Steven Nowotny and staff, Ruth and Sabrina, and the Bay Area Hospital staff, especially Dr. Fabricio Zuniga, Dr. Dom, and nurses Angie, Cherrie, Brooke, Carrie and Jamie for their compassionate care. Pallbearers will be Edward H. Cruz, Sr., Edward H. Cruz, Jr., Luis Garza, Sen. Carlos Truan, Lionel Rios, Jr., and Thomas L. Lewis. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 from 3:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 P.M. that same evening at Seaside Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
