Obituary: Thomas C. Hill Jr. '43

SALISBURY, MD - Dr. Thomas C. Hill Jr., 89, a longtime Salisbury physician, died Saturday, June 4, 2011, in Salisbury. Dr. Hill was born June 8, 1921, in Crisfield. Although he, his parents and his sister moved several times during his childhood, they always returned to the family home in Crisfield. He graduated from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, in 1943, and from Cornell Medical School, New York City, in 1946. After clinical training and a stint in the military, he returned to the Eastern Shore in 1955 to raise his family and build his medical practice. Thomas Hill lived a life of service to others. He served first in the U.S. Army Air Force and then in the U.S. Air Force upon leaving medical school, working in medical research on issues such as the testing that led to the safe use of pilot ejection seats. Dr. Hill maintained a private practice in internal medicine in Salisbury for 40 years. Throughout those years, he was on the staff of Peninsula General Hospital (now Peninsula Regional Medical Center) and served two terms as chief of staff. Thomas Hill was an active member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Salisbury for nearly 50 years. During that time, he served several terms on the vestry and as treasurer and regularly assisted in services as a lay reader, chalicist and usher. He found great strength in his involvement in the men's study group there. He was a 50-year member and past commander of the Salisbury Squadron of the U.S. Power Squadron. Much of his service in this organization was involved in teaching boating safety. A loving and devoted husband and father, Tom Hill was known by his family to be a strong supporter of education and a role model for service to others. Putting other people first was a lifelong habit practiced daily at home. He took great pride in his children's accomplishments, always valuing learning, effort and a focus on others. Thomas Hill was predeceased by Lucy Ann Eaton Hill, his wife of 56 years who was also an Antioch College graduate, and by David E. Hill, his youngest son. He is survived by children, Thomas III and Kathy Hill of Beaverton, Ore., Lucinda Hill of Arlington, Mass., Antioch College graduates James Hill '79 and Sherry Hahn '78 of Arlington, and Sarah Hill and David Lawton of Ardsley, N.Y.; grandchildren, Sam, Max and Jennie Hill, Alexander and Isabelle Lawton and Ben Kohler; and second wife, Agatha Price Hill. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Church in Salisbury. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will follow in Sunny Ridge Memorial Park Cemetery in Crisfield. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Foundation
