Paula Roth ‘72

Born October 16, 1949 in Billings Montana, Paula Roth ’72, died on Oct. 13, 2017. Paula Roth M.D., B.Sc., M.Sc., FRCSC, enjoyed adventures that led her around the world. E

ducation was her rail pass taking her through high school in Helena Montana and on to her first secondary education stop at Antioch College at the age of 17. That experience in pre-med fueled her passion for science. This led her to London, England where she earned a Master's Degree in Micro Biology.

Paula then spent significant time in Trinidad and Tobago helping locals in a medical clinic. From Trinidad and Tobago, Paula came to the cities in which she would live the rest of her life, Toronto and Hamilton. There she began medical school and eventually chose her specialty, Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMasters University.

Recently, Paula took up Bridge. She thoroughly enjoyed her Tuesday visits with her Hamilton as well as her cottage Bridge groups and had found another outlet for her competitive nature. Being so competitive, Paula often excelled…and even dominated family board games at holiday gatherings. Paula's loving character and strong work ethic were inherited from her mother and father, Alice and Jerry Roth. Alice, a Registered Nurse, and Jerry a School Principal, instilled the importance of education and goal setting, which were concepts Paula knew well. Her giving spirit intensified over the years, drawing others to the flame following Paula's example.

As a college teacher, OB/GYN Physician, friend, Aunt, daughter and sister, Paula was the symbol of stability and dependability. Delivering hundreds, if not thousands of babies during her career, Paula could be depended upon by both her patients and colleagues. Her passion for her work was surpassed only by her love of family and church.

Paula was preceded in death by her Mother, Alice Roth and her Father, Jerry Roth. She is survived by her U.S. family, Sister Jolene (Rick) Bonander, brother Ron (Liz) Roth, Nephews Dana Bonander, Brandon Roth and Jacob Hebert, nieces Heather Scott, Mallori Roth and Kelsey Hebert, great nieces, Quincy Bonander, Sabine Scott and Sylvie Scott, and great nephew, Kayhl Riddle plus numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and Nieces and Nephews. Her Hamilton family counts in the hundreds and begins with Ryerson United Church. Paula found and gave great comfort at Ryerson and loved everyone in the congregation.

As president of the Women's Group, Paula was able to give back – something she loved to do. Paula rests in the arms of God, now. Her heart, spirit and love remain with us as we look to the day we are with her again. Live by her example as we live by that of Jesus.
