Phyllis Ann Pennewitt, former staff

Phyllis Ann Pennewitt, formerly the Mayor of Xenia, OH, age 82, died after an extended stay at Harmony Nursing Home on Friday, January 12, 2018. The 2015 Greene County Women's Hall of Fame Recipient was born February 12, 1935 in Xenia, Ohio, the daughter of Paul and Clara Jones.

Phyllis attended Xenia High School, Wright State University and Antioch, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Accounting. Phyllis retired in 1996 from the McGregor School of Antioch as an accountant. She served as Mayor of Xenia from 2006-2010. She previously served on City Council from 2000-2005.

Phyllis was a loving, giving, energetic, positive, supportive unselfish soul, who volunteered for numerous duties including: XACT Board of Directors, President of the Child Conservation League; Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Board of Trustees; member of CASA; Greene County Historical League; Greene Memorial Hospital and the Business and Professional Women's Club.

Phyllis served as chairperson of the Board of Zoning Appeals; Board for Recreation, Arts and Cultural Activities; Greene County Regional Planning Committee, Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; Golden Age Senior Citizens Board of Trustees and Mayor's Association of Ohio. Phyllis was also a member of the Faith Community United Methodist Church for 68 years, where she served as Pre-School Coordinator, Co-Chair of the Mission/Peace Advocate Commission; was a member of the Pre-Administrative Board; Council of Ministries and was a commissioned Stephen Minister of Faith. Phyllis's greatest love was for God, family, community and children.

She was married to Donald Pennewitt for 47 years until his death in 2016. Their love for each other was a shining example for all. In addition to her husband, Donald; Phyllis was preceded in death by her son: Richard Wilson Jr., and daughter-in-law: Dina (Freshley) Wilson. She is survived by her 4 sons: Barry (Nancy) Wilson of Huber Heights; Daniel (Brenda) Pennewitt of Hilliard; Tracy Wilson of Xenia and Rocky (Marcia) Wilson of Xenia; daughters-in-law: Connie Wilson of Centerville and Susan (Don) Rakowski of Alta, Wyoming; 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were January 20, 2018 at Faith Community United Methodist Church, 100 Country Club Dr., Xenia. She was interred with her husband at Valley View Memorial Gardens.
