Samuel P. Peabody, former Trustee

Samuel P. Peabody, 92, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in New York City. He was born February 21, 1925 in Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, the son of The Right Reverend Malcolm E. Peabody and Mary Parkman Peabody.

Sam graduated from Brooks School and, after being discharged from the U.S Army in 1945, attended Harvard College, graduating in 1950, then Teachers College at Columbia University where he did his graduate studies. Later, he was a teacher at the St Bernard's School in New York and The Rye Country Day School in Rye, New York, where he served as Head of the Middle School.

He was a consummate advocate for children and families. Sam was on the boards of Reality House, Antioch University, Citizens' Committee for Children of New York, Broad Jump, and Prep for Prep. He was also on the Vestry of St James Church in Manhattan. He loved his life, his family and his friends. He could never get over how lucky he had been. Sam loved Maine, climbing the mountains of Mt. Desert Island, and was an avid squash player. He enjoyed traveling and was a unique story teller. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Sam is survived by his loving daughter, Elizabeth Peabody, his brother Malcolm Peabody Jr., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his adoring wife, Judy, his sister Marietta Tree, his brother Endicott "Chub" Peabody and his brother George Peabody.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13 at 4 PM at St. James Church, in New York City. Services in Maine will be announced at a later date.
