William R. Hitchman '43

William R. Hitchman, 94, of Charleston, passed away Wednesday, December 25, 2013, at the Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston, WV. William was a native of Charleston, a member of Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church and a retired engineer from E.I. DuPont. He also lived for 42 years in Texas, S.C., and Va. William was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from V.P.I. (now Virginia Tech), attended Kanawha Junior College and Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio. William was a member of the Masonic Lodge, York Bodies, member of Beni Kedem Temple, volunteer with Meals on Wheels and West Virginia Harvest. Additionally, he had been an Elder at the South Aiken Presbyterian Church, Aiken, South Carolina. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Margaret Herscher Hitchman; sons, Joseph M. Hitchman of South Charleston and Bruce Neal Hitchman of Sarasota, Fla.; daughters, Grace McGrath of San Diego, Calif. and Eve H. Carter of Staunton, Va.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, December 29, at Bream Memorial Presbyterian Church, Charleston with Rev. Robert Wood officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.
