Parking

Free parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis in any of the Antioch College lots on Commencement day. A state-issued disability parking permit is required for parking in designated accessible spaces.

Inclement Weather

Commencement is planned to be held outdoors, so please come prepared. Families should consider the comfort and well-being of guests who are elderly or require special resources when planning for the traditional outdoor ceremony.

Commencement will be moved indoors only in cases of extreme weather forecasts such as ongoing downpour, high tornado probability, or temperatures exceeding 95 F or below 50 F. Light sprinkles of rain and/or brisk wind are unlikely to cause the ceremony to be moved indoors.

The inclement weather call will be made a few hours before Commencement begins (generally by 7:30 a.m.) to allow for all of the logistical changes that must be made. Students will be notified of the weather decision via e-mail a few hours before the Commencement ceremony.

In the unlikely case of sudden, extreme weather—unanticipated thunderstorms or high winds that spring up during the ceremony—standard security protocols will go into effect: the ceremony will be put on hold and students, faculty members, and guests will be moved to interior locations immediately surrounding the Commencement site.

If inclement weather is imminent, the ceremony will be held in the South Gym of the Wellness Center at Antioch College. Because of limited seating, only graduates, two family members/guests with tickets, faculty, and special guests will be seated in South Gym. The remainder of the attendees can view a live stream of the ceremony from Studio B in the Wellness Center, Cinema Room in the Arts & Science Building, and in McGregor 113.

COLLOQIA 2018 | Graduate FAQs |

Antioch College announces Gabrielle Civil, former Associate Professor of Performance at Antioch College from 2013 to 2016, will be Commencement 2018 speaker. Commencement will be held Saturday, June 23, 2018.

Civil was chosen for Commencement speaker through a process used in the past few years where nominations were taken from the campus community and the results of the campus-wide survey were ranked by the graduating Class of 2018. The ranking was reviewed by the Board and President, who made the final selection. She was top-ranked.

Gabrielle Civil is a black feminist performance artist, writer, and poet, originally from Detroit, MI. She has premiered almost 50 original solo and collaborative performance art works around the world, including a year-long investigation of practice as a Fulbright Fellow in Mexico and a trilogy of diaspora grief works after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. She has also guest-edited special issues of Aster(ix) and Obsidian and contributed to Small AxeArt21Something on PaperThe Third Rail, and the recent anthologies Kitchen Table Translation and Walk Towards It.

Her memoir in performance art, Swallow the Fish (CCM Press) was named as a “Best Non-fiction Book of 2017” by Entropy and one of “34 Books by Women of Color to Read This Year” (electricliterature.com). “Tourist Art,” her fine art/poetry collaboration with Haitian artist Vladimir Cybil Charlier, was a “Spotlight Zine” in the POC Zine Project. Her forthcoming book Experiments in Joy explores race, performance, and collaboration and was inspired by the ground-breaking symposium of black women and performance that she organized at Antioch College in 2014.

A graduate from the University of Michigan with Highest Distinction, she earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from New York University. After serving as Associate Professor of English, Women’s Studies & Critical Studies of Race & Ethnicity at St. Catherine University (St. Paul, MN), she was Associate Professor of Performance at Antioch College from 2013-2016 where she earned tenure. In 2017-2018, she was Laura C. Harris Scholar-in-Residence in Women’s and Gender Studies at Denison University.

The aim of her work is to open up space.
